This year\u2019s theme was, \u201cStriving for Diversity,\u201d and focused on the\nchallenges and rewards of pursuing \u201cbig D\u201d diversity beyond the baseline legal\nrequirements. Attendees were treated to a wide range of presentations by\nleaders in the Diversity &amp; Inclusion field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/SW-Presenting-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"Sheridan Walker presenting Applicants with Disabilities - Unknown Barriers to Risk and Poor Applicant Experience.\" class=\"wp-image-4931\" width=\"355\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biddle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/SW-Presenting-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/biddle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/SW-Presenting-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/biddle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/SW-Presenting-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/biddle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/SW-Presenting.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><figcaption>Sheridan Walker presenting <em>Applicants with Disabilities &#8211; Unknown Barriers to Risk and Poor Applicant Experience.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Day one kicked off with Christy Kiely, a practicing attorney at Hunton\nAndrews Kurth, who helped attendees distinguish between \u201cdiversity\u201d and\n\u201cinclusion,\u201d explained their interplay, and provided practical suggestions for\ninstitutionalizing their philosophies.&nbsp;\nFollowing a short break, Marc Brenman, Managing Partner at IDARE,\nentertained and informed attendees regarding the numerous ways that\norganizations can measure diversity and its effects beyond employee\ndemographics. After lunch, Karen Elkins Cohen and Adrienne Kimball of Rubicon\nPrograms regaled attendees with their story about how their entire organization\nwas literally transformed by and through diversity and inclusion philosophy.\nFinally, Sheridan Walker, Founder and CEO of HirePotential, took much of the\n\u201cmystery\u201d out of identifying and eliminating artificial barriers for\nindividuals with disabilities and enlightened attendees on how making the world\nmore accessible benefits everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After such a jam-packed first day, attendees unwound a bit at the\nBiddle and AJE-sponsored cocktail hour held in the common area at the Prologis\noffices, a newly and beautifully renovated space that managed to bring the\noutdoors inside and feel both expansive and intimate at the same time. It was\nthe perfect space to digest the day\u2019s offerings, network, and follow-up with\nBiddle staff and Summit presenters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Day two saw Biddle staff members Dan Kuang and Michel Pati breaking\ndown the promises and actual capabilities of today\u2019s artificial intelligence.\nThe Summit wrapped with Candee Chambers, Executive Director of DirectEmployers\nAssociation, and John Fox, President and partner of the law firm of Fox, Wang\n&amp; Morgan, waxing on whether and to what extent employers can make lawful\ngender and race\/ethnicity considerations when making employment decisions in\neither the compliance or diversity contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who were lucky enough to attend the pre-conference session with\nDan Kuang got an in-depth look into the California Fair Pay Act\u2014how it was\nconceived and how it is supposed to work\u2014compared with other equal pay\nlegislation. Pre-con attendees also received an easy-to-use compensation\nanalysis tool and received hands-on training from the genius who developed it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to early feedback, the 2019 BCGi Summit was a smashing\nsuccess. Executive Vice President, Patrick Nooren delivered his\ncharacteristically passionate opening and closing remarks and introduced BCGi\u2019s\nnew Director, <a href=\"\/news\/announcing-our-new-consultant-and-director-of-bcgi\/\">Matt\nNusbaum<\/a>. Matt is already full of ideas for next year\u2019s Summit, but he also\nwants to hear directly from the BCGi family regarding what you would\nlike to see and hear at future events. Don\u2019t be shy!
