{"id":1307,"date":"2014-07-02T16:18:32","date_gmt":"2014-07-02T16:18:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biddle.com\/blog\/?p=1307"},"modified":"2025-01-22T16:43:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T00:43:38","slug":"50-years-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biddle.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/02\/50-years-ago\/","title":{"rendered":"50 Years Ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>50 years ago today, July 2, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/artandhistory\/history\/resources\/pdf\/CivilRightsActOf1964.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Civil Rights Act<\/a> into law. The new Act &nbsp;prohibited segregation and discrimination in all public places including hotels, restaurants, theaters, sports arenas, and parks. &nbsp;It also made it illegal for employers to make employment decisions on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin and established the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to enforce the law. &nbsp;The Civil Rights Act was first proposed by <a href=\"\/blog\/eeo-industry-news\/historic-civil-rights-announcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">President John F.
